Well, this concludes my Summer Cancer Prevention Series of blogs. While I think that I covered what I believe to be the most important information, there is a host of information that I was unable to get to. So, I will continue to write about cancer prevention periodically and after my enlightening Interview with Charlotte Gerson will also keep up with my discoveries in Gerson Therapy. My mother in law is going to attend one of their wellness retreats in January so I will have an interview with her as well so I can share with you her experience on the full therapy for a week.

I have received questions from my readers via email and in person and I would like to take this opportunity to address them. In an effort to gain clarity I met with Marsha Anderson, the Educational Resource Specialist at the Institute, and we chatted for a bit.  She was very generous to answer all of my questions to the best of her ability.  Anyone who has the chance to meet this dynamo lady is one lucky ducky!

By far the most common question was, “What about sunscreen?”

In regards to sunscreen, the mainstream verdict is still a bit sketchy.  With all of the research I have done and picking Marsha’s brain I have come up with a pretty common sense approach mixed with some suggestions that might surprise you.

  • The regular consumption of fruits and vegetables is the absolute most important thing one can do to prevent skin cancer.  If you are shocked that it is not sunscreen keep reading.  Eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables provides your skin with protection from the inside out and in some cases with extracts, such as that of broccoli, applied directly to the skin.  I am a super fan of super foods like Spirulina and Wild Blue Green Algae, Crystal Manna and Blue Manna,  for their high nutrient content.  They are all natural and do not have the edgy side effects of energy pills and diet products.  Not only do they supply my family’s diet with plenty of protein and vitamins that strict vegetarians need, they deliver a well rounded supply health protection which includes sun protection. I sprinkle them in our fruit and veggie juices and they blend in great.  I make it fun and show my sons that the juice turns really green and we giggle at the color.  In a hurry, you can add these to organic orange juice and it packs quite the energy punch.  I also really like the product Pure Synergy.  It is well rounded and includes dulce, which is a great form of iodine: a necessity if you do not use table salt.  If you eliminate salt in your diet completely you can buy an iodine solution approved by the Gerson Institute.  Their website lists their product sources but if you want to know how to get it, just contact me below and I will guide you.  A Natural Medicine article asserts, “Other foods or supplements such as algae, like chlorella and spirulina, are often called superfoods for their high nutrient content. The phytochemical Astaxanthin, a component of micro algae, is becoming popular as a supplement because of its high antioxidant value. Research is still being done, but it has been shown to give protection to the skin and eyes against ultraviolet radiation.”
  • Furthermore, tomatoes, green tea and carrots provide a lot of protection.  Vitamins C and E reduce production of cells and existing UV damage and you can retain the best forms of these vitamins through eating the foods that contain them.  Vitamin A reduces the formation of squamous cell skin cancer.  According to Gary Null, Ph.D, “Large concentrations of vitamin C can be found in fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, lemons, limes, papaya, strawberries and cantaloupe. Vitamin C and bioflavonoids – the watersoluble substances that help to protect your capillaries – are found in the white linings of these and other plants. Many vegetables also pack in vitamin C including tomatoes, broccoli, green and red bell peppers, raw lettuce and other leafy greens.”
  • Vitamin E is present in many foods but some of the best sources I have found are almonds, avocados, sunflower seeds, turnip and mustard greens, pine nuts, spinach, collard greens, arugula, broccoli…the list goes on and on.  As you can see, a diverse diet of fruits and vegetables, including some nuts will give you plenty of protection.
  • Vitamin A can be found in an array of fruits and veggies: According to Lorri Mealey who writes for Lance Armstrong’s Live Strong website, “Look no further than your local grocery store for Vitamin A in its most natural form. Vitamin A is in many foods including eggs and dairy products. However, you can get your daily allotment of Vitamin A without the cholesterol, fat and added calories with a variety of fruits and vegetables. Vitamin A is found in carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, squash, cantaloupe, apricots, broccoli and spinach, just to name a few. The general rule is that the deeper the color, the more Vitamin A a food contains.”
  • Now let us talk about sunscreen.  Research is increasingly showing that the chemicals in our body products are most likely causing our ecological systems a lot of damage.  I like to think of it like this:  anything you put on your body should be of food grade quality.  Your body absorbs it just the same as if you were eating it so you should take just as much care when considering what you put on your body as you would put into it via your mouth!  Marsha shared with me that many of the sunscreen products actually become carcinogenic when exposed to the sun.  When you add to that the fact that most people hold onto their sunscreen for too long, it sits in hot cars or beach bags and becomes more and more toxic.  The waterproof kinds are even more hideous because they are locked into your skin.  The ladies at The Gerson Institute recommended that the Aubrey Organics brand as a good option if you are going to be out in full sun for a long time.  But it is wise for you to consider some other options.
  • Here is where common sense comes in.  Where a wide brim hat when out in full mid-day sun or find some shade.  The sun is important and provides us with natural Vitamin D so exposure is not bad if it is done smart and with ritual.  Natalia Rose, intelligent clinical nutritionist, recommends, “…sun-bathing (no oils or SPF, ideally nude in the sun’s mid-morning rays,)” in her blog and in many of her books.  The idea is that you take advantage of the sun’s healing and energizing abilities early in the day before it gets to its peak.  If you are particularly sun sensitive then stick to the earliest and latest sun exposure and make sure you do it daily.  It actually activates all of the beautiful Vitamins you are getting from your food when you follow a plant based diet.
  • You see, I happen to believe that we have been given the most amazing gift as humans and when we abuse it with harmful foods (anything not plant based,) negative lifestyle and reckless living we interrupt the arc of health that is automatically provided to us.  We have the free will to decide where we want our health on this earth to be.  It is no others’ hands but our own.  How ridiculous does it seem to think that we need to buy oodles of tubes of cream to apply before it goes bad all over our bodies when we can just put a bit of conscious thought into our daily activities and be responsible?  If you are wondering now about whether or not I use sunscreen I will tell you with complete affirmation, “No.”  I do not apply it to my children either.  That is my personal conviction.  Do your own research and what your intuition tells you is right.

I have had some write me with questions about Althziemers treatment suggestions and how to deal with patients on chemotherapy.  These things a very far outside of my league and I do not feel comfortable making suggestions to my readers regarding such serious topics.  I can only refer you to Healing the Gerson Way so you can make your own informed decision.  I will say that the Gerson therapy has high degrees of success with most degenerative diseases and many maladies that one might not think it would help.  It treats the toxicity and deficiency that creates disease.  I can only defer your questions in matters as such to their website: and recommend that you call their toll free number with any questions you have:  (800) 838.2256  The ladies who answer the phone are VERY knowledgeable and can assist you far better than I ever could.  I am merely using their technique as a guideline to living healthy for life preservation and the avoidance of getting into a deathly situation where one faces the treatment as a life saving effort.  I am trying to guide my readers the best I can to help them see the possibility of living clean and not building toxicity upon deficiency.  There are other holistic or alternative treatments out there but my belief is that the Gerson Institute is the best start.  It not only treats and heals but it prepares the body and mind for the lifestyle we should all be tending to anyway and gives a true and scientific prescription for healthy living.

Another question has been about what type of water we should be drinking:

  • The Gerson Institute does not require water drinking because the patients ingest so much fresh fruit and vegetable juice that they are well hydrated.  The suggest using distilled or reverse osmosis water for brewing tea and anything else you might need it for.
  • Natalia Rose, as mentioned above, also asserts that we do not have to drink much water when we are eating water filled foods.  She continues to explain that if we eat organic fruits and vegetables and drink their juices we are receiving the most pure and organic form of water that is available.  It has all of the nutrients we need because it comes straight from the vine.
  • I, personally, follow this practice that they both suggest.  Except, I am very active and right after yoga or running I will drink some distilled water to quench my thirst quickly.  Otherwise, I have no need for it.  Most of the meals I prepare are raw and do not need to be cooked in water.  If they do, I use a bit of distilled water.  I use distilled for everything now and do not bother with mineral water.  Some disagree with this but I have found it to work great for me and my family.  It works for brewed or sun teas.
  • The idea here, and you will see that it is common running theme in my writings, is that we begin to move back toward the most natural way of living possible.  Distilled water is the closest to rain water there is.  If you find yourself with the option of mineral water I am not suggesting you shun it.  I am not a purest:  just merely suggesting ways that one can purify their consumption to the best of their abilities.

I have a couple more questions that I will get to in:  That’s a Wrap!  Part 2.  I am also still fielding questions so please do not hesitate to send them to me in the box below.  I will do my best to answer them for you or guide you somewhere that can I think can do better than I.  This will in most cases be either the Gerson Institute, their publications and events or Natalia Rose’s Detox website, books and events.

Be sure to tune into That’s a Wrap!  Part 2, later this week.  I will describe a bit more in detail the Institute itself.  Visiting their facility is quite fascinating and I will detail some opportunities my readers have for their own Gerson experience!

Electromagnetic Danger August 25, 2009

Filed under: Summer Cancer Prevention Series — Simple Jess @ 9:51 am

There is a danger out there that many of us rarely consider when talking about environmental hazards brought about by man.  I had heard stories and read a few articles about the dangers but did not realize the seriousness until my interview with Charlotte Gerson.  She takes this threat very seriously.  Keep in mind that she is far from a quack.  She is steeped in medical research and has a strong network of affiliations with study, old and new, that transcends the binds of modern medicinal control.  She walks the walk and it is a road less traveled but it is a worthwhile detour.

She discusses the dangers in her book The Healing Way and calls the problem an “electromagnetic smog.”  We all have an energy field surrounding us, which used to function properly and undisturbed.  In modern times, the frequent use of electronics in our homes and cell phones is a very real concern.  Officials have yet to acknowledge any health threats but if I have learned nothing else of value in the past few years, the most important is that one cannot fully trust official organizations and their corporate interests.  Charlotte’s research says, “Robert O. Becker, MD, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize, called the proliferation of electromagnetic fields ‘the greatest polluting element in the earth’s environment.”  You can read a very interesting interview with him: click here.  She recommends using the precautionary principle, “If in doubt, don’t,” and suggests cutting cell phone usage to a minimum.  As with all of our electric devices, it should be turned off when not in use and not be kept on one’s body.  She recommends also using a hands free device for communications with these phones to keep them as far from your body, your head in particular.

The limitations that we need to impose on ourselves are beneficial two-fold:  we take precautions for our own health and we also reduce our carbon footprint on the earth by keeping our energy use down.  We cannot rely on our government or modern medicine to protect us.  We have to become an advocate for ourselves, our families and friends, our communities and our earth!  There is a large and growing population of citizens speaking out against the dangers of the issues I discuss in this blog.  There is a lot of information out there and it is our responsibility to learn what we can.  It can be a little unnerving due to conflicting studies and such but I recommend that you follow your instincts, not your fears.  These issues are nothing to become fearful of to the point of inaction or radical behavior.  They are serious  issues that take a consistent concern, networking and support.

I long ago eliminated the use of a microwave in our home and I will elaborate on my reasons why in a post to come.  I also do my best to use as little electricity as possible and get outside.  The more we stay in our homes in an electrical soup the more our electromagnetic fields are disturbed and our systems do not function as well.  Obviously, most of us are not going to eliminate electromagnetic exposure completely and that is not what I am suggesting.  I am suggesting that we step back and take an honest look at what we think of all the stuff in our homes.  Living is supposed to be done outside.  Our homes are our shelter when we need it, not a cave to cloister ourselves in and become electromagnetic mutants in!  Just try to live a bit more free of devices and gadgets.  Get outside and use your arms, legs, heart and lungs to experience life.  Take deep breaths and just be.  Get your brain and body used to doing this again.  Let go of thought and live without fears or expectations and the worthy thoughts will come.  Let your intuition speak and be ready to listen.  There are too many greedy people out there hoping that you won’t.

One really great resource for this information is a website called  They have been around for some 25 years and used to be a publication but have moved onto the internet now.  I find them to be an incredible resource and it is free.  If you find their information useful and want to support them, you can donate if you wish.  This is how they support their entity in place of the subscription fees they used to require.

Environmental Cancer Prevention August 23, 2009

Now it is time for me to move onto the environment, another HUGE factor in the development of cancer in people.  This is not to say that they environment is this big, bad and ugly monster that is out to destroy us.  Some industries might have us believe that so they can continue using the earth as resource and giving nothing back.  Its as if we are the abusive one in a very bad relationship.  We take and take and take and rarely give anything back.  Selfish interests and greed are dominating the way we live and we follow like happy and fat little babies who are being given all the candy they can stuff into their mouths.  But are we really happy?

Considering the rise in depression and sickness, with cancer and heart disease being out of control along with many other degenerative diseases and allergies, I have to ask:  are we fat and happy or are we desperate for something better.  If we are the latter, then it is high time we give respect to the earth, including the animals and plants that live on it with us.  What happened to the truth of living with synergy?  Is there any chance of balancing the equation again?  Whether there is or is not we have to do it.  There is no trying.  We have to do it.  Not just for ourselves but if that is your only motivation then I guess that will work.  Just do something.  Do not sit back and let yourself and the ones you love get sicker.  If you ever go to bat for anything in your life, this is the big league here.  Get motivated and learn.  Then do.  It is a challenge but what choice do we have?

Food is, of course, the ultimate portal to healing and prevention.  It is very important to eat organic.  Unfortunately, mass produce is so chemically treated, toxic and depleted of nutrition that it is a waste of your time.  Do not bother with all the packaged products, especially all of the soy and fake meat or cheese products.  Its junk.  Organic fruits and vegetables, preferably stuff you grow yourself or purchase from a non GMO certified company is the foundation for human and planetary health.  Support your local organic farmers, they need it.

The products we buy for our bodies are also very important.  First of all, we do not need all that stuff.  When you feed your body right and move it around a little bit your skin and hair glow.  Your fingernails take on a beautiful light pink color that Revlon could not match.  You do not accumulate excess weight so all the diet junk becomes a distant, and even embarrassing, memory.  All the moisturizing, primping and spraying is a waste of your time and your life.  Cut as much of this stuff out as you can.  If you need to keep a couple of things go ahead, once you begin to detox all the other junk out of your body it will recognize all of it as the junk it is and then let you know when you need to let go of it all.  There are some nice options for holistic and natural products but still keep it minimal, you do not need it when you are living clean and beautifully!  Then, all of the waste products and oil required for all the shipping and manufacturing of these things reduces.  You are healing yourself and the earth.  You will feel so good that you will probably want to go hug a tree!  Ha ha.  But you will feel good and you’ll start thinking more about the things you can do to be a better steward for the earth and its creatures.  We scratch each others backs, you know.

I will not go into all of the things one can do to reduce their carbon footprint.  I discuss those things in other posts and they are all here on my site, in the archives, and I still write more specific blogs about several topics concerning sustainability as a contemporary lifestyle.  I am also now a co-author at the website and you can find original articles there that you will not find here in my blog!  Just keep it simple for now and work on yourself.  Think about your environment a little bit more.  As the title of this blog suggests, keep your halo spinning and glowing with an abundance of methods that support each other.  It will only get brighter and brighter.

Try a little visualization.  Imagine a halo over your head.  What does yours look like right now?  Is it dim?  Maybe a little droopy?  Average?  Now sit up straight, pull your shoulders back and lift your chin.  Imagine it growing and glowing brighter and think about what it would take to sustain that.  Try to think of this visual during your daily activities.  Especially before bed, focus on your halo and let your mind just go.  The good ideas and inspirations will come and the things you need to release will present themselves.  Then you can let them go.

I leave you today with a Buddhist parable:  Releasing the Cows

Releasing the Cows
(Told by Master Thich Nhat Hanh)

One day the Buddha was sitting in the woods with thirty or forty monks. They had an excellent lunch and they were enjoying the company of each other. There was a farmer passing by and the farmer was very unhappy. He asked the Buddha and the monks whether they had seen his cows passing by. The Buddha said they had not seen any cows passing by.

The farmer said, “Monks, I’m so unhappy. I have twelve cows and I don’t know why they all ran away. I have also a few acres of a sesame seed plantation and the insects have eaten up everything. I suffer so much I think I am going to kill myself.

The Buddha said, “My friend, we have not seen any cows passing by here. You might like to look for them in the other direction.”

So the farmer thanked him and ran away, and the Buddha turned to his monks and said, “My dear friends, you are the happiest people in the world. You don’t have any cows to lose. If you have too many cows to take care of, you will be very busy.

“That is why, in order to be happy, you have to learn the art of cow releasing (laughter). You release the cows one by one. In the beginning you thought that those cows were essential to your happiness, and you tried to get more and more cows. But now you realize that cows are not really conditions for your happiness; they constitute an obstacle for your happiness. That is why you are determined to release your cows.”

With Love, light and freedom of cows:),

Exercise and Relationships August 19, 2009

Filed under: Mind, Body and Spirit,Summer Cancer Prevention Series — Simple Jess @ 1:48 pm

Now that I have touched on the vicious cycle of stress and food, I think it is necessary to address the cycle of our relationships, stress and exercise.  Just like it can be really difficult to alleviate stress when we are forcing our bodies to digest foods that are below par, it is a real challenge to make exercise a regular part of our lives if we do not have high quality relationships.  On the other end of the continuum, our relationships can suffer greatly if we are not moving our bodies in a way that cleans and heals it.  Food is the most important starting point when turning your life around but exercise is a very close second.  If one approaches exercise properly, begins by tackling the imbalances in their body and progressing toward expressing that beautiful chemistry into movement: the results can be truly amazing.  It is a balanced and grounded place from which our spirits are nurtured and the source of all being can move through us.

Inevitably, there will be interferences.  Life always seems to get in the way.  That is why it is so important to follow the process with seriousness.  No flashy or ego soothing diet plans.  No miracle cures.  It takes time and a serious desire to slow down.  Think a moment on all of the maladies with our current society.  Most of our problems stem from greed and short attention spans.  That is why the focus on breathing in yoga is such a direct path to focus.  One cannot focus on your breathing and be hurried at the same time.  Our breath is like our heartbeat but has a very subtle difference.  We cannot focus on our heart beats and do something about them.  We can focus on our breath.  It is tool we have been given for correcting our imbalances.  We should be focusing on our breathing as often as we can.  When exercising, our breathing picks up speed and volume capacity.  We breath more oxygen into our bodies and the flow of energy is nourished.   Lingering stresses are washed away and we are recharged with a whole host of oxygenated cells.  We can go about our days and nights with a sense of calm that encourages healthy relationships.  Remember, we begin with ourselves and work our way out.  If we are not taking good care of ourselves, we are not doing anyone else the justice we are designed to do.  Some interferences we can ignore and eliminate.  Others we cannot: like I cannot just stop being a parent because my children need me, right?  The point here is that the interferences are either worthwhile or not.  We can see which they are more clearly when we are in our own sphere of health.  We are more focused on what is worthy of our time and what is not when we are clear.  An example of a bad interference is  a television show.  If it is something that is a very small part of our life and we do not rely on it for winding down at night or use it to distract us from our thoughts, it can be a nice moment to enjoy whatever the show is expressing.  It is important to stay grounded and focused on yourself, though, especially with this type of interference, because it can easily support addiction, checking out, mindless munching or lack of interaction in our relationships.

When we are taking good care of ourselves we tend to be more receptive to reading people who are good for us and those who are toxic.  If this idea is new to you, promise to yourself today that you will not allow toxic people into your sphere anymore.  And if you have toxic people in your life currently, it is time to rethink how you interact.  Do not allow them to cloud your sphere.  The more you focus on yourself and the nourishment of your personal world the better you will be to those around you.

It can be extremely difficult to start focusing on ourselves and allow our full potential to blossom when the people in our lives expect something very different from us.  Their confusion and emotions will manifest themselves in many different types of actions, whether they be direct or subtle manipulative actions and words: they have nothing to do with you.  It is time to allow our spirits through and to let them shine.  With relationships comes fear.  We are so afraid to lose people and equally afraid of losing ourselves in the process.  Who are we?  We are infinitely more powerful and talented than we give ourselves credit for.  The world we live in does very little to nurture that in us because it is being driven by greed.

Another challenge with regards to relationships is that we can easily slip into a dependence on a person who we attach our emotional insecurities to during our journey.  This can be an instructor, trainer or workout partner.  We become comfortable with this person and do not want to stretch our boundaries and try something new.  This is a dangerous prospect.  While it is good to foster relationships with those who support our efforts, it is equally important to make sure the foundation is within ourselves and we have a genuine practice that is our own.  I find support in all kinds of people but I am the only one who can keep the waters calm and remain present in my practice.

One example of a person who is healthy in my life is one of my yoga instructors, Rama.  I barely know him but he inspires me and makes me comfortable in learning how to better express myself through yoga.  One thing that he does that I love so much is to say now and then, “Its okay to smile during yoga.  You do not have to be so serious.  In fact, it opens your passage a bit so more oxygen can flow.”  I just love that and I think of him sometimes during the day and just smile for no particular reason: I just do it on purpose.  As Phyllis Diller once said,  “A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.”  But I do not rely on Rama.  I do not become attached to him.  I still take classes with other instructors that do not inspire me in the special way that Rama does and I learn from them too.  It rounds out my learning.

It is time to eat well, move your body and find room to express yourself fully.  Find that room in the space and gaps of life that you find yourself thinking negatively or incessantly.  Instead of watching the television or reading a rag magazine, go for a walk or do some light stretching and let your body encourage your spirit rather than containing it miserably.  Love yourself.  Love the people in your life for they are a gift, whether it be obvious or hidden:  love them.  The best way to truly love them is to be the best expression of yourself as you can muster.  Now we can continue learning how to avoid cancer developing in our bodies!  Until the next post:

Love and light,

Eliminating Toxicity August 11, 2009

Filed under: Summer Cancer Prevention Series — Simple Jess @ 5:12 pm

There are many suggestions out there for detoxing these days and I could go on and on about all of the methods.  One of the most enlightened options is the raw food diet.  While this method warrants a lot of credit, it often skirts the issue of getting toxic matter out of one’s body: this is something that is extremely important upon the launch of a raw food detox.   If one is serious about detoxing they will quickly learn, upon research, that enemas and colonics play an important role.  This post is an extension of my recent post:  click here for An Interview with Charlotte Gerson and ventures into relatively lewd territory.  Let us go there.

Yes, the very sound of it is gross and most people just will not even consider it.  I understand.  Shucks, we live in a society where people put human qualities to the faces of their dogs, yet shutter at their “animalistic” behaviors when they poo “inappropriately”  in relation to the society we breed them in.  Heaven forbid we discuss our the poo of our pets, let alone our own!

If you’ve stayed with me this far, you can keep it up.  Come on.  Trust me, I understand.  This is not about to be a dinner table conversation in most social situations.  So I ask you to consider it and marinate for awhile, in the privacy of your internet environment.

In regards to my recent interview with Charlotte Gerson and affiliations with her institute, let’s talk about coffee enemas.  Just think of it as chic new coffee product even though it has been around for centuries.  A new coffee buzz:)  Okay, I am done being cheeky.

“The coffee dilates the bile ducts, thus allowing the liver to release toxic accumulations.”  This, a discovery by Dr. Max Gerson, is from Healing the Gerson Way.  It discussed how recent discoveries by three scientists from the Department of Pathology, University of Minnesota confirm this.  “They show that rectal coffee administration stimulates an enzyme system in the liver, which is able to remove toxic free radicals from the bloodstream.  The normal release is increased by 600 to 700 %! ”

The book, for which a link is provided in the introduction, goes into great detail to explain this, scientifically, but I will not get into that too much here.  I just want to provide a gentle introduction to something that is a bit hard to….swallow.  Charlotte recommended to me that you do this once a day, due to the highly toxic nature of our environment these days.  From our commutes, to toxins in our water;  it is not enough to simply eat well and exercise.  If you are not ready to even consider this, be aware that it is a clinically effective practice and is absolutely necessary if one wants to heal their cancer, or varieties of disease, the Gerson Way!  Here is a link to another blog that does a great job of explaining the coffee enema: click here.

Love and light and stinky poo (back to being cheeky,)

Interview with Charlotte Gerson and Review of Healing the Gerson Way

Filed under: Summer Cancer Prevention Series — Simple Jess @ 4:46 pm

One look at Charlotte Gerson is all it takes to peak your interest in her philosophy.  At a proud 87 years of life, she has managed to buck modern medicine and is nothing short of a healer.  She is spry, full of energy and, in her own words, “…could talk for hours.”  Although she traveled a lot during her formative years and still does in order to publicly speak, she still speaks with a beautiful German accent.  She is a treasure of a woman whom you immediately notice to be modest and no nonsense.  She is serious and direct but very kind:  the kind of combination required when dealing with the plagues of disease upon us.  She is committed to healing people and carrying on her father’s work.

We met at at her home for the interview but it turned out to be more of a conversation.  You will see that regardless of the therapy’s simplicity, the complexity of the modern world and our power hungry nation is what makes healing people so difficult.  Vanity, convenient living and sheep mentality are a few of the many mountains her institute has to cross in order to successfully heal people from cancer and various other diseases.  But this woman is committed and has been at it for decades now.  It is contagious.  It is inspiring.  It is a simple and beautiful truth.

She was a gracious host without any pomp, circumstance or eccentricity.  Her simple German sensibilities were evident in her gestures and words.  I have to admit that I was a little nervous, in an excited way: I knew I was in for a schooling.  I had my questions, which I will share with you all but many of them seemed irrelevant due to the simple and matter of fact basis of Gerson Therapy.  Of course, the complexity of life is what gets in the way and that is where a healer such as Charlotte steps in with her father’s research and tedious studies as a breath of fresh air…as fresh as you can get here in the states!

The very first thing she did was to walk me over to the back of her house to show me something.  I had complimented her home, to which she modestly replied, “Oh, it works for me.  It is the smallest one in my neighborhood.  You know, some of the houses are really big.  I do not need all that.”  Then she walked me over to her sliding glass doors which have a beautiful view of a valley and a mountain in the background.  She was quick to point out the towers on the mountain and frowned as she pulled out her electromagnetic sensor.  She explained that her doors have a special plastic material to block it out and demonstrated for me a reading through the door and then with it open.  Apparently, they penetrate glass but not solid walls.  Then we sat down for a lovely conversation. (For more information on electromagnetic danger, click here.)

She started out by saying, “I have a suggestion for you. (Pause)  Do not bother yourself with talking to people about prevention.  Really, do not trouble yourself.”  I asked why.  She told me that although the prescription for health is simple, it is not what people want to hear.  She says that people do not want to be told how to eat.  When she informs her patients, who are predominantly at various stages of cancer, including stage 4, that they have to cut out animal products because it lowers our bodies’ pH to an acid state and eat only fruits and vegetables with very little grains, some will say, “I cannot do that.”  These people are very sick and desperate and even some of them will not listen to this rule . So if someone is not experiencing a cancer take over they do not think anything is wrong.  There for, it is even more difficult and in most situations futile to try to convince people that they are harming themselves and could prevent the cancer with a change of lifestyle.   I could tell that she was not trying to be discouraging but she simply did not want to see me spinning my wheels.  I can relate to this because I know that when I am passionate about something that is worthy, I fluctuate between feeling like I am on the right track and questioning the productivity or efficacy of my cause.  Many of us can relate to this David vs. Goliath scenario.

So, the two basic problems in human bodies that the therapy treats are:  TOXICITY and DEFICIENCY.  We need to start getting really comfortable with these words because they need to be addressed for our nation of obese and diseased people. She says, “Do you know what happened when they decided to conduct obesity studies on animals?  The animals would not overeat!  So what did they do?  They gave them MSG which inhibits the feeling of being full.  Scary stuff, huh?”

I laughed uncomfortably.  She said, “Its not funny.”

I replied, “No, its not.  Its just one of those things that is so horrifying that I sometimes have to laugh to release the absurdity of it.”

With the tone of a loving mother, she says, “I know.”

When I asked her about the contradictions between some of the suggestions of buck the trend or holistic nutritionists and her treatments, such as the food combining rule of not mixing fruit with other foods, she regarded me with patience but I could tell there was a level of frustration there because of her certainty.  But she managed to get her point across with a simple, “…pay no attention to that.  Do not trouble yourself with that stuff.  We deal with patients in stage 4 cancer, if eating fruit with vegetables is so toxic then why are our fruit and vegetable combinations healing the sickest of patients?”

She explains to me that babies are now being born with cancer.  This deserves repeating: babies are being born with cancer!  This is a product of our lives and if there is anything “genetic” about it, it is because we are passing along deteriorated health to our children.  She tells me a story of a baby born with Down’s Syndrome who’s parents treated her with the Gerson Therapy.  She is now in 3rd grade with all of the other students, functioning just like them and looks like them.  When it comes to Charlotte and the Gerson Therapy the proof is in the pudding.  She rolls up her shirt sleeve to show me her skin, which looks like that of a woman in her 30s, and chuckles, “Doctors have a lot of fun with me!”  She scoffs at the popular medical answer for so many ailments: genetics.  In most cases, genetic problems can be healed by the Gerson Therapy.

What would happen to pharmaceutical companies if the Gerson treatment was accepted?  They would be a very small industry that would be used in the most emergency type of situations as opposed to infiltrating our daily lives.  There is a pill for every ill, right?  Wrong.  There is an ill for every bad choice we make and our bodies in tandem with the earth have the ultimate healing properties we need when guided by professionals who choose not to be a part of “the soup,” as Charlotte puts it.

She canceled her health insurance when she was 34.

The best way I can succinctly describe how the treatment works is to say this.  The food we eat either creates fermentated blood which becomes acidic or oxidated blood which becomes alkaline, which is preferred.  The blood should be at a pH of 7.35 or higher.  According to the chemical studies of Otto Warburg M.D., Ph.D, who’s work received a Nobel Prize, most adult Americans have a blood PH pf 6.5 or lower!  His studies were awarded in 1931…Charlotte repeats, “1931!!!”  Still the medical community ignores this.  When following the Gerson Method, the food provides you with potassium which you are deficient in and it removes sodium which feeds cancer.  This heals the body and starves out the cancer cells which are multiplying in the acid state.  Cancer cells become “dormant” at a pH of 8.5 and die while healthy cells will live.  Virtually all degenerative diseases, including cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, kidney and gall stones, and tooth decay are associated with excess acidity.  Charlotte’s father, Max Gerson, M.D., feverishly conducted studies, researched and experimented with many patients that had been turned away from medical facilities or had learned about his methods and volunteered to participate.  It began with a mission to cure his own migraine headaches that were “inherited” and unfolded into a complex life’s work of treating cancer and other degenerative diseases.  It all has to do with what we consume via our mouths and skin as well as what we breath.  The Gerson patients’ environments are very controlled for a long time, often up to 2 years.  This is a challenge for all involved but it works and it also teaches the patients how to live after the cancer is gone.

I asked Charlotte what I could suggest to my readers since it is pretty clear that most people are not going to commit to this lifestyle as a preventative measure.  What are a couple of things that one could do?  The first thing she said was, “Eat all organic.  It is so important.  But to be serious about it you must be vegetarian.  All animal products create acid in our blood.”  We talked about what being a vegetarian means and she was clear that medically speaking it includes their milk.  She says, “That’s part of the animal, right?”

The importance of detoxing is where she goes next.  The fruit and vegetable diet fixes the problem of DEFICIANCY but the TOXICITY also has to be addressed.  This is why detoxing is a must.  I go further into detoxing in another post.  Click here for more information on the method.  She also goes into detail about it in the book.  She is very serious when she says that this includes children.  They are toxic from what we have passed onto them, what they have eaten thus far and from immunizations.  She expresses that women should follow this diet when pregnant and breastfeeding to be sure they are serving the baby and themselves.  Some of medical problems with babies these days stem from the mother’s body leaching off of the baby’s pancreas because she is deficient, as in recent cases of hypoglycemic mothers.  Remember:  TOXICITY and DEFICIENCY.  I do not embolden these words as a scare tactic.  It is only to signify the importance.  Especially when dealing with our children, it is important to know what we are doing.  The Gerson Institute provides current, accurate information to people who are considering and/or healing with the Gerson Therapy through:

  • Training and certification of medical professionals and caregivers in the Gerson Therapy.
  • Information, patient assistance and public education about the Gerson Therapy.

Now, back to her suggestions.  She also stresses that we eliminate salt.  In her words, “…a little is dangerous, a lot is poison.”  Another must is to eat foods without labels.  She quoted a friend of hers as saying, “Anything with a label is a product.  I would rather eat produce!”  We discussed the harm of packaged and labeled foods and the damage of labeling ourselves one thing or another.  You see, Americans believe they have to have a label, an identity so they can easily explain themselves to others.  It is a bit lazy.  There is a false security and sense of safety in that.  If we could just let go of that desire and refuse to be blindsided by agribusiness, we can begin to heal our bodies and our earth.

When I asked her, as a mother, a simple tip she could give my readers for healing their children she said, “Carrot and apple juice.  Fresh pressed.”  We know it is a bit more involved than that but if you take one tip today for mothering adopt this.

I had intended to speak with Charlotte for an hour but she pointed out to me that we had completed another half hour of discussion.  She was not kidding that she can talk and she has a lot of important things to say.  If we allow genuine voices like hers that are not coming form a place of greed or bottom line dollar signs to be drowned out…snuffed out by our industrial nation, we are losing a precious gift and spiraling further down a path of self destruction.  Small farmers are disappearing unless they manage to adopt a new way of organic produce farming and fit into a new niche market that is still fairly small itself.  I will not get started at this time on the problems organic farmers face these days but I will write more on that later.  You see, I have a lot to say too.  I asked her, “What do I do now?”  She said, “Just do your best.  Keep trying.”  She explained that even though it is easy to feel discouraged there are signs of progress.  She says that people are slowly becoming more aware of the alternatives.  The question is: are we catching on soon enough and quickly enough?  So I decided I will continue to speak out about cancer prevention but will temper it with the reality check given to me by this power house of a woman.

As we wrapped up our conversation she offered me a fig from a dish on her coffee table.  She had picked them from the organic fig tree in her back yard.  I have never been very big on figs but I tried one and it was heavenly.  It is amazing how great something tastes when it has been picked ripe and eaten immediately.  She said, “Here, have another.  You are hungry.”  I had another because, yes, I was hungry.  I am hungry.  I am hungry for more information and for a welcoming of the Gerson Therapy into the medical community.  I am hungry for good wholesome food for everyone.  I am hungry for truth.  Charlotte fed me and I have to say that one day with her was healing on all levels.

As I have reflected upon my visit with Charlotte, I kept thinking about how I wish I could talk to her so much more.  I wish she were my grandmother.  That is part of the beauty in her lifestyle.  She has bucked the trend, just like her father and is now available to her descendants at 87 with an able body and mind that are far superior to our average 30 year old, these days.  I wish I had one of my grandmothers still alive to share her wisdom and bond with my children.  Isn’t that what life on earth is about?  I want to be living and doing it well.  I want to be that for my family.  I want to be there for them when they need me for as long as I can.  I have a purpose on this earth and my legacy to my children is beyond important.  Charlotte touches that part of you and you cannot help but to reflect deeply after being around her.

I highly recommend her book:  Healing the Gerson Way and suggest the Institute’s latest documentary The Beautiful Truth.  Charlotte recommended to me the documentary Dying to Have Known which I plan to watch.  There are many products available on their website and as I continue to sift through them, I will share what I learn and recommend things I have found to be useful for living a clean and long life.

IMG_4158Charlotte stands in front of her fig tree.  I did not do so well with the lighting so I failed to capture her incredibly blue eyes and amazing skin.

Whatever your blockage might be, just consider this alternative way of healing and living.  Of course, it is best to adopt the lifestyle fully especially if you have or have had cancer, your life depends on it, but if you are not ready for that just read the book and take what steps you can in moving toward a more natural way of life.

Thank you so very much to Charlotte Gerson, for opening up your home and mind to me.  I can only hope to do your work justice.

Any and all questions can be submitted below and I will address them at the end of the month when I wrap up the entire series.  Check it out here at:  That’s a Wrap!

As always with love and light,

In motion

Filed under: Mind, Body and Spirit,Summer Cancer Prevention Series — Simple Jess @ 11:37 am

This week I am writing about exercise.  This a simple introduction to the topic.  We covered cancer prevention issues with food last week because it is the most important and now I want to address the benefits of moving your body.  You can move your body, exercise, all you want but if you are putting junk in your mouth then most of the health benefits are null.  Assuming you have embraced or accepted the fact that food is what makes you, we can now move onto activity.

For something that is so difficult for people to commit to, it is really quite simple.  There are many ways to get your body moving but the most important thing is that you do something.  It is not necessary to train for a marathon or learn a new workout, although these things can be beneficial for some.  Simply get out and go for walks.  If you have children, get down and roll around with them.  Do some light stretching in the morning or at night.  Take pleasure in cleaning your house with non-toxic and/or homemade cleaners…there are surely a few things that need to be done around the home, right?

I do not want to get to involved with spouting all of the research that supports exercise and deals with all of the benefits.  I just want to give some gentle motivation to get you moving a little more.  Turn off the television tonight and do something you enjoy.  Tune out the news and all the chatter that is so destructive to our vibrant bodies.  Tune into the frequency of your body and take good care of it.  It is not only your vehicle in life, it is the material that nourishes your spirit if you nourish it!  After reading this, get up and walk away for your computer.  Choose to move!

One of my favorite activities is to garden.  It works my body, calms my mind and creates beautiful art and food for my family!  What is your favorite thing to do to move your body?  Submit here and I will follow up with readers’ suggestions later this week.  Do not forget to check out my Interview with Charlotte Gerson in another post to follow later this week as well!  I continue writing about exercising for cancer prevention in Exercise and Relationships.

Love and light,
